Gonzalo Higuain, the Argentine striker became the third expensive player in football history with his move to Juventus. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (£80m) & Gareth Bale (£85m), both players belonging to Real Madrid outsmarts Higuain’s move to Juventus. The Napoli striker had one good season at Naples in which he scored 36 goals in 35 matches and it rated him in the world’s best. It was Higuain charismatic goal-scoring spree and Juventus desperation to win Champions League which brought him to Old Lady of Turin.
Higuain became third most expensive signing of the world
Juventus officially put it on their site juventus.com, “Juventus Football Club can today confirm that it has purchased the registration rights of Gonzalo Higuaín for 90m euros, payable in two financial years.”
Higuain won the Capocannoniere, Serie A’s golden boot winner last season after scoring a league record. He scored 36 goals as Napoli finished runners-up to his new club. It was only the second time in this century a player scored more than 30 goals in a Serie A season. Luca Toni scored 31 goals for Fiorentina in 2005-06. It was really a worthy season for Higuain to make a move. He couldn’t have done better than £75.3m move to Juve.
Paul Pogba to become world’s most expensive signing
A €90m (£75.3m) move from the rival club which finishes second in the Serie A table in 2015/16, tells a different story. It’s not only Juventus desperation to achieve Champions League glory, it is also their fear to lose the domestic trophy in Serie A. Their most admired midfielder Paul Pogba is already on move to his old club Manchester United for a record-breaking signing of more than a £100m deal. So, they are looking for a lethal striker to compromise with their midfield loss.
Higuain move is genuine. Juventus were looking for a world class striker, which is in short supply in the transfer market. No one can fill that spot better than Higuain from the existing available strikers in the transfer market. Some big guns are making a move to Chinese Super League, some are already occupied with their existing clubs. It left with few in the group who can match Higuain’s skill set.
Argentine Higuain moved from River Plate to Real Madrid, where he stayed for six and half years. He scored 107 goals and won three La Liga titles & 2011 Copa Del Rey title with them. Then, he made a move to Napoli in 2013 for £34m. Only three season later he has tripled his value in transfer market despite being the poorer finisher for Argentina national team.
La Albiceleste lost 2014 World Cup final because Higuain missed the shitter in the first half. Then he put his penalty up in the sky in 2015 Copa America final. And a year later he couldn’t beat Claudio Bravo, in one-to-one battle at 2016 Copa America final. Three unforgivable misses in football history in three years and he became the third expensive footballer in the history.
Lionel Messi must be proud of Higuain. He almost cost Messi his national career and Higuain is enjoying the best time in his life. What a move to remember, we hope he can win Champions League for Juventus which is still believed to be a distant dream for Juventus.
