Neymar shined to keep alive Brazil hope to repeat history

Most of the historic nations have gone home early from FIFA World Cup Russia 2018. There was pressure on Brazil too, but Neymar shined to keep alive Brazil hope to repeat history. Paris Saint-Germain man scored and provided assist to Firmino to lead Brazil 2-0 against Mexico to book a place in quarter-finals.

As a World Cup fans, you want historic teams to go further in the tournament. You want to see teams like Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Uruguay, Italy, Netherlands, France, and Spain to see them in the later stages of the tournament. But, at FIFA World Cup 2018, you’re out of luck.

Italy and Netherlands didn’t make out to the World Cup finals, Germany left for home early, and Spain and Argentina weren’t good enough to make out to the later stages as they lost against Russia and France respectively at last 16 stage. There were pressure on Brazil as well knowing their CONCACAF neighbours are used to causing problems for them, but finally they make out.

El Tri were resilient too and looked good, but it’s their final touch which disappointed them again. They won 1-0 against Germany and they could have scored more against them. They should have learned something from that victory, but they were once again unimpressive with their final touch and it cost them game against Brazil.

Yes, Brazil is a formidable side. They have Neymar, Coutinho, Jesus, Willian, and probably enough on bench in Costa and Firmino to cause trouble for any side in the world, but they can be beaten if you’re good enough with your finishing. Hirving Lozano, Carlos Vela, and Andres Guardado have had their chances but they failed to convert them into goals.

Brazil were simply magnificent in attack and Mexico’s goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa must be given credit to minimize their attacking prowess. Ochoa made some brilliant saves from Coutinho, Neymar, Willian, and Paulinho to deny Brazil hurting them more, otherwise it would have been disaster.

However, Mexico’s no.1 failed on two occasions to make the save and Neymar took the game away from them. Willian provided a good cross from the left in the penalty box in 51st minute and Neymar full stretched scored from two yards sliding in the goal post. Two minutes earlier, Coutinho had a great chance to give Brazil lead, but Ochoa made a great save to deny the Barcelona man.

Ochoa great saves followed subsequently as he denied Paulinho and Willian in quick successions. Meanwhile, Allison Becker was also taken surprised by Carlos Vela spinning ball. It took Allison palm to get rid of any counter-attack.

When the football fans were thinking of hat-trick of penalty shootout in a row and hoping for Mexico to get the goal, Neymar ends their hope of dream game by putting an end with his brilliant assist in 88th minute. Coutinho’s replacement Firmino made a great run to provide a touch to Neymar’s pass to make it 2-0.

Mexico had no chance of any comeback from there despite getting six added minutes. Brazil happily marched ahead to repeat history once again. Five time World Champion will face the winner of Japan vs Belgium game in quarter-finals to take a step further to win their 6th World Cup title.
