Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea finally got beaten by Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur defeated Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea 3-1 at Wembley Stadium. Finally, unbeaten start of Sarri’s career at Chelsea got to an end. It comes in a London derby, which Chelsea had dominated in the past. It feels like a psychological defeat to the Blues, as though have accepted that their fairy tales against Spurs have lasted.
Last season, Chelsea needed a victory against Spurs to keep them in contention of UEFA Champions League place on 1 April 2018. But, Blues suffered the defeat with same margin at their home Stamford Bridge.
Maurizio Sarri knew that it’s going to be a tricky match. He knows that he could teach everything to his players, but in a heated derby likes this, he can’t go into the head of his players. We have seen his former Napoli side playing against Juventus. Partenopei players have reacted badly. It goes same with Chelsea against Spurs.
Spurs didn’t dominate the ball possession, but they were calm and composed. They scored three goals and agitated Chelsea players which helped visitors grab three yellow cards.
Dele Alli continued from where he left against Chelsea last season scoring twice in April fixture. He gave an early lead to Spurs in 8th minute and at the same time interval, Harry Kane doubled Spurs lead. What was left be done, Son Heung-Min produced a brilliant solo effort in the second-half to make sure Spurs grab all three points here.
Chelsea got a consolation in Olivier Giroud’s 85th minute strike as it has been the case for him during much of his career. He did score a late goal again, but he couldn’t salvage a point.
Tottenham Hotspur coach Mauricio Pochettino was very happy with the performance of his team. He has nothing to complain about. He said as BBC reports, “There’s no need for me to talk too much. I’m so happy, so pleased. I don’t need to analyze too much. All credit to the players because they were fantastic. The staffs are so happy managing this group of players. We need to be humble and recognize playing like this, we can do big things. Our challenge is to keep going and be consistent. That’s our challenge for the rest of the season.”
With victory over Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur also managed to get ahead of London rivals on the Premier League points table. Hotspur with their 30 points, moved ahead of Chelsea’s 28 points to grab the third spot. Manchester City continues to dominate the league with their 35 points with a 4-0 victory over West Ham United, whereas Liverpool maintained their second position with a 0-3 victory over Watford.
Maurizio Sarri suffered his first defeat of the season in his 19th match as in-charge of Chelsea. It’s a pretty good stats, but somewhere it has to be lasted. It came on a bad day inflicting on him a London derby defeat.
Sarri said, “I’m disappointed because we played very badly. I think we played very badly in all directions – physically, mentally, technically and tactically. I knew we had some problems and with this performance today, it was clear to everybody we have problems to solve. I think in the last three or four matches we have started not really very well. Today I didn’t like anybody.”
