Maurizio Sarri blames his players’ over-confidence for defeat against Wolves
Suddenly, Premier League’s one of the third undefeated team has started losing. Before match day 14, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea were three undefeated teams in the league. But on match day 14, Chelsea lose their first game against Tottenham Hotspur 3-1. It followed with a 2-1 loss against Wolverhampton Wanderers on match day 15. The thirteen game undefeated run suddenly turned into back to back defeats. Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri blames his players’ over-confidence for defeat against Wolves.
Chelsea were leading 1-0 thanks to Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s 18th minute goal, but coming into second half they conceded two goals in very quick time. Raul Jimenez scored the equalizer in 59th minute and then Diogo Jota handed Nuno’s side winner four minutes later.
Maurizio Sarri says we played very well for 55 minutes. Then once Wolves equalised he says we were suddenly another team. It worries him more than the result that his side did not react to the first goal by the opponent. #WOLCHE

Maurizio Sarri was very disappointed with his players attitude as they failed to react to Wolves’ equalizer. He said as The Guardian reports, “I think we played very well for 55 minutes. After the first [Wolves] goal – that was an accident because we were in full control of the match – we were suddenly another team, without the right distances, without our football. I don’t know why. I’m really worried not for the result but for the fact that we didn’t react to the first goal of the opponent.”
Some controversial decision didn’t go in Chelsea favour. Alvaro Morata’s penalty appeal was ruled out and a foul on Willian wasn’t given, but Sarri refused to talk about them. He is more worried about his team’s attitude.
He adds, “I think it’s more important to talk about the attitude after the first goal. We were not the same team as before. So I don’t want to discuss if there was a foul on Willian or not. It’s not important for me. Maybe it was for the result, but not for me. I need to understand why the team was suddenly another team.”
Chelsea will face next Premier League leader Manchester City. It may not be the right time to face Citizens after losing two in a trot, but Maurizio Sarri sees it as comeback game and he may get the help from his over-confident players.
Sarri said, “For me, City is the best team in the Europe and maybe in the world. So the match is difficult for this reason. Of course, after this match, we lost confidence, but maybe it’s better because sometimes my players show me that they have too much confidence.”
Chelsea will return to home game on Saturday against Manchester City. The home support may help them to get back their confidence after losing two away games and they may end City’s unbeaten run at Stamford Bridge.
