Jose Mourinho’s summer signing is all about strengthening defensive play for Manchester United
Manchester United’s first two acquisitions come in Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred and FC Porto’s Diogo Dalot. Tottenham Hotspur’s centre-back Toby Alderweireld is also their prime target. It gave clear indication that Jose Mourinho’s summer signing is all about strengthening defensive play for Manchester United.
Manchester United have the second-best defense in the Premier League. The Red Devils conceded only 28 goals, one more than the Premier League champions Manchester City but they scored 38 goals less than them. It puts a different picture in everyone’s mind but Red Devils coach think differently.
He is continuously trying to improve his side from the back. The Special One knows that he has a great shot-stopper in David De Gea. He only needs little more support at back to keep clean sheets at home and concede lesser goals in away games.
Mourinho was never impressed with his back four in his first two seasons. He brought in Eric Bertrand Bailly and Victor Lindelof last season, but the duo never won Mourinho’s trust. This season, Mourinho wants to rebuild the team scrapping out unwanted players.
Daley Blind, Matteo Darmain, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones are expected to depart from Old Trafford next season, and Mourinho has already layout the chart for his new looked team. Midfield duo Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini is also expected to make way for others to fill in. Mourinho is sensing an opportunity to find his target early before their transfer price skyrockets.
Shakhtar Donetsk midfield talent Fred costs Manchester United €60M, but he is a kind of player Mourinho was hunting for. Diogo Dalot is a good add-on for ageing Antonio Valencia’s replacement in the right-back position. Toby Alderweireld will be a prized possession at back after losing so many long-term serving players. Alderweireld will give Red Devils recognition that they need at back after losing Chris Smalling and Michael Carrick.
Mourinho knows that he doesn’t lack the attacking players at front. He has Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Alexis Sanchez, Marcus Rashford, Romelu Lukaku, Jesse Lingard, and Nemanja Matic at up front to make the difference.
Manchester United need to look little more organized at back to give attacking players more freedom going forward. However, we cannot rule out a new signing in forward department as well. Players like Gareth Bale, Antoine Griezmann, Douglas Costa, and Paulo Dybala have been linked with the club. It’s only a matter of time before the big names transfers revealed to the world.
Jose Mourinho has got £150m of transfer money to spend. Fred, Dalot, and Toby Alderweireld together will take that expenditure to £100m, and Mourinho will be very eager to splash heavy on a forward player. Since joining Manchester United, Mourinho has made some kind of rule to grab four players in every summer transfer market, we hope that principle continues in upcoming transfer windows.
