You should listen to your former players or club legends when they speak. This time Liverpool’s legend John Aldrige and Phil Babb spoke on Jurgen Klopp’s team crisis. Aldrige believes Reds need to sign three new players, two at back and one as centre forward. Whereas Babb maintains his comment on his expert area i.e. defense.

Aldrige told Skysports as Express reports, “We do need a goalscorer that is going to get 20 goals plus. I have been saying that for some time. We have got some very good forward players but Daniel Sturridge is being utilized as a squad player and not quite finding his form at the moment. He is the one that perhaps could get us the goals that takes the pressure off the defence but it’s not ideal.

Jurgen Klopp defensive woes to cost Liverpool again

We will get goals and the three players upfront are all worthy of getting 15 goals each within a season. But for me you need that one clinical scorer that can take the weight off the back four.”

Liverpool’s defence has always been a problem for Klopp and still he didn’t bring any new player in the summer to fill in the void. Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk was the ultimate choice, but somehow transfer didn’t happen.

Aldrige comments, “I think he (Van Dijk) would have made a big difference at the back, we need a leader at the back. For what’s out there, from what I can see, he would have topped the bill. For whatever reason it didn’t happen, he’s still a Southampton player and you’ve got to respect that.

I don’t know what Jurgen Klopp will do. If he can’t go and get Virgil Van Dijk for whatever reason than perhaps you might have to have a plan B somewhere along the line because there is a position that needs strengthening. Not with one but perhaps two centre-halves in the next 12 months.”

Aldrige is quite right. He consistently scored 30 goals per season for Liverpool for two long seasons replacing legendary Ian Rush. He knows the worth of a striker who can take the pressure off from defenders. Three signings have to take place quickly for Liverpool, if they want to capitalize on their plethora of talents.

Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip haven’t clicked together as a defensive pair, and Liverpool’s attacking formation doesn’t allow fullbacks to help the centre backs. Liverpool misses an authoritative figure at back since Jamie Carragher departure and it’s difficult to fill in the void left by the English man.

Former Liverpool defender Phil Babb also held the same view. He told skysports, “you’re looking at the performances of the centre half pairings and they have been probably under par. Liverpool have conceded almost two goals a game. That’s is not really good enough at Premier League level.”

“What have stayed the same for the past couple of seasons are the defensive frailties? The recruitment in those areas – I don’t think he [Klopp] has done enough.”
