Lionel Messi’s Barcelona stretched their La Liga unbeaten run to 29 games as they get past abysmal Athletic Bilbao with a routine 2-0 victory. Suspended Luis Suarez’s replacement Paco Alcacer opened the scoring for the Catalans and Messi complete the scoring chart with scoring his 25th La Liga goal of the season.
Athletic Bilbao has failed in recent years to make an impact in Spanish top division as they did in past. Spain’s fourth most successful club failed to give even a fight to the Blaugranas. Barcelona dominated the match from the very first minute and it took Paco Alcacer only eight minutes to go on the scoresheet.
Messi didn’t take much time to keep himself in the hunt for European Golden Boot race as well. The Argentine talisman scored his 25th goal of the La Liga 2017/18 season in 20th minute thanks to Ousmane Dembele good work. It left Messi only three behind European Golden Boot leading goal scorer Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.
Barcelona already had a 2-0 lead and it seems they weren’t satisfied with the scoreline. Philippe Coutinho hit the crossbar twice and Paulinho was denied by the post as well which helped Athletic not to suffer further damage.
It helped Barcelona to stretch their unbeaten run to 29 games in La Liga this season. They have only nine games to go to become the first unbeaten team in the La Liga throughout the season. The previous record which stretches to 32 rounds belongs to Real Sociedad held during 1979-80. And, if Barcelona maintains it at the end of the season, they’ll become the first invincible team of Spanish Primera division.
It could happen with the help of young lads in Coutinho & Dembele, and Messi manages to continue his form till the end of the season. La Pulga has eight goals in his last six matches to his name and he has scored in each of those matches.
