La Liga’s cult teams need to be more ambitious than vying for a place in European Leagues
La Liga’s cult teams need to be more ambitious than vying for a place in European Leagues. It’s a bold statement to make knowing even a strong team like Atletico Madrid’s coach Diego Simeone says that his team competes for only third place in La Liga. According to him, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are on different level. They maybe, but he and other La Liga clubs’ bosses shouldn’t forget that they are playing in the same league. So, they are competing at the same level.
La Liga 2018/19 season has witnessed early drop points by La Liga giants. Both Barcelona and Real Madrid have lost seven points in their opening seven games. And, it’s only La Liga’s cult teams’ lack of ambition which still sits them behind Barcelona and Real Madrid on La Liga points table.
If teams like Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, Valencia, Villarreal, and Athletic Bilbao would have better planned their season ahead, they’d not have sitting behind both La Liga giants. They could have expected to lose against the both La Liga giants playing them at their homes. But, it would have made the difference of only six points as per current scenario. They would have been ahead of them on points table.
They need to face the reality that Barcelona and Real Madrid can also lose points and they need to better prepared to put themselves on La Liga summit in those situations. It’s shame that teams like Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, Valencia, Villarreal, and Athletic Bilbao is sitting behind Barcelona and Real Madrid on points table despite La Liga giants lack of consistency in their form.
They should have been ahead to them. It would have put more pressure on Barcelona and Real Madrid. They shouldn’t be relaxing right now that they are still at top of the Spanish Primera Division. Sevilla, Atletico Madrid, and Athletic Bilbao have done good enough job against Real Madrid, but they have lost points against league minnows.
It’s unacceptable from them. They must have planned their season ahead. They need to be more ambitious and challenging for La Liga title, rather than playing for an European berth on points table.
Sevilla and Atletico Madrid have proved time and again, that they are better than Europa League teams. They can also fancy their chances against most of the UEFA Champions League participants. So, why not fight for the title back at home?
La Liga’s cult teams can’t excuse themselves saying they can’t compete with Barcelona and Real Madrid. They need to be more ambitious and plan their season much ahead before entering into the new season. Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, and Valencia have the ability to challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid and they have proven it in the past. It’s just they’re lacking the mental strength to see themselves as La Liga title winner.
They need to see it from different eyes, it’s a possibility. They may have 1% chance, but they can still do it. Nothing is impossible. Another Leicester story is awaiting, who knows it might come from Spanish Primera Division.
