La Liga got a new leader in Sevilla after Barcelona slip points again
After Barcelona won 4-2 against Tottenham Hotspur in midweek, there were speculations that Catalans will keep the winning momentum at Mestalla against Valencia. They needed a victory to put themselves on the top of the table, but a subdued Barcelona side only played a 1-1 draw against Los Che. It gave La Liga a new leader in Sevilla after Barcelona slip points again.
Barcelona forgot to understand that it’s no more competition between them and their arch-rival Real Madrid. Real Madrid also lose 1-0 against Alaves a day earlier. Thankfully, Barcelona are able to sit at least at second place with Lionel Messi’s equalizer against Valencia. Real Madrid are down to fourth after their loss against Alaves.
La Liga has found a new leader in Sevilla. Los Rojiblancos have been impressive in last one month. After losing Getafe on matchday 4, Sevilla have bounced back with four back to back victories in the Spanish Primera Division. It has arrived against the likes of Levante, Real Madrid, Eibar, and Celta Vigo.
However, it wasn’t a good week for Pablo Machin side. They lose 2-1 to FC Krasnodar in their Europa League fixture ending their four match winning run, but they bounce back with confidence knowing La Liga leadership position is at stake.
You don’t often see Barcelona and Real Madrid both struggling after eight matchdays. Either Barcelona or Real Madrid are expected to rule the La Liga points table, but Spanish primera division has found a new leader in Sevilla.
A week ago, I have written about La liga’s cult teams’ lack of ambition to win the league. They fight only for their place in European League. I was frustrated not to see any cult teams leading the table as Barcelona and Real Madrid both slipped 7 points in first seven games. However, The Guardian columnist Sid Lowe has warned with their article, “La Liga: boring, uncompetitive, and all that. Hang on…“
Now, at least Sevila have the lead and Andalusians need to prove that they’re serious enough to win the league. They are at the top of the table. They are next lined up against Barcelona. It’s their time to show that they also exist in the league. Their ambition is not only to finish in top four or top six, they actually want to win the league.
Sevilla is already favourite to win the Europa League as the Europa League King returns to their favourite league, but winning La Liga should be ultimate goal now. They have defeated Real Madrid, they must have the confidence to defeat Barcelona and dominate the league. The season couldn’t get better for Andalusians if they able to pull a league double with Europa League.
