Julen Lopetegui’s sacking confirmed after Real Madrid’s 5-1 debacle in El Clasico
The latest encounter between two of the Spanish giants, Barcelona and Real Madrid resulted in favour of Barcelona. Luis Suarez’s hat-trick performance in absence of Lionel Messi earned Barcelona 5-1 victory at Camp Nou. It left Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui in dismay and his sacking confirmed after latest debacle.
Marca reports that Julen Lopetegui time is over at Santiago Bernabeu after spending four months at Real Madrid’s helm. Real Madrid’s board can no longer be patient with their coach whose winless run in La Liga stretches to five games and it includes 5-1 loss against the bitter rival Barcelona.
Marca says, “Florentino Perez is set to discuss the Real Madrid coaching situation with his directors in the coming hours and it is looking increasingly likely that Julen Lopetegui will be replaced by Antonio Conte this week. Five goals conceded at Camp Nou appear to have sealed Lopetegui’s fate and Italian could arrive as early as Monday.”

It’s not the first time that Real Madrid have lost El Clasico by five goals in last decade, but each time the margin of defeat has increased the pressure is mounted on Real Madrid’s board to take a decision. Jose Mourinho got the backing of his board in his first season as incharge, but Rafa Benitez survived only two months after his 5-0 loss at El Clasico.
Julen Lopetegui is definitely not going to enjoy the same respect as both veteran managers. He has already lost the confidence of board after losing 3-0 against Sevilla, playing a 0-0 draw against Atletico Madrid, 1-0 loss against Alaves, and 1-2 defeat against Levante.
He could have boosted his morale with a good result against Barcelona, but he suffered an inferiority complex against a Barcelona side who were playing without their star man Lionel Messi. Real Madrid board can’t forget a 5-1 loss against their bitter rivals. Julen Lopetegui will have to go after latest debacle.
