Both champions Atletico de Kolkata and Chennaiyin FC shared points in their opener

Atlético de Kolkata and Chennaiyin FC played a pulsating 2-2 draw in front of a 10,973 strong crowd at Rabindra Sarobar Stadium. Kolkata got the lead with Sameehg Doutie goal nearing the hour mark, but two goals from Jayesh Rane and Hans Mulder put the defending champions 2-1 up. It looked like defending champion is going to get a flying start, but, Iain Hume late penalty in 86 minute earned a point for the first season ISL winner and both champions goes undefeated in their opener.

Top two sides of Hero Indian Super League played an intense battle, and pressed each-other early in the game as well. Chennaiyin FC came close to get a goal in eighth minute when a deflected John Arne Riise free-kick from the edge of ATK’s penalty box rattled the crossbar.

ATK’s Helder Postiga nearly had opened the scoring in the 20th minute with Doutie’s cross from the right, but Bernard Mendy made a crucial block to deny their marquee player getting first goal of the season.

Kolkata got the breakthrough in 59th minute with Doutie goal. The South-African winger made a calm and compose finish as he slotted past Kerr to give his side a 1-0 lead. Defending champion Chennai got the equalizer in 66th minute when Jeje shot got deflected to Rane, who tapped in to make it 1-1. Only four minutes later Hans Mulder made it 2-1 with his powerful strike which took a deflection and crept past Majumder in goal to make it 2-1 for the Super Machans.

Hume came close to equalize for ATK in the 74th minute after a cross from the left found him in the middle, but Kolkata’s last season top goal scorer failed to produce the magic as his header got wide, but 15 minutes later it was Hume who redeemed his mistake late in the game scoring from the penalty spot to made it 2-2 for home side.

Jerry Lalrinzuala foul on Doutie inside the penalty box, earned the penalty, and Hume stepped up to the spot and shot low to Kerr’s right to make it 2-2 as both sides shared the spoils after a thoroughly entertaining encounter that ended all square.
