Mumbai City FC & Atlético de Kolkata played a stalwart draw to remain unbeaten in ISL 3

Mumbai City FC and Atlético de Kolkata played a stalwart 1-1 draw at Mumbai Football Arena on Tuesday. Despite, Vijaya Dashmi (Durga Puja) celebration, 8000 fans came to see the match between both sides. Matias Defederico gave the hosts Mumbai lead in the 27th minute with a brilliant strike. But, hosts couldn’t hold the lead after defender Pronay Halder received his marching orders from the referee in the 72nd minute to give ATK a man advantage. A man advantage paid off for the visitors Kolkata, when Javi Lara scored his second goal of Hero Indian Super League 2016 in the 82nd minute to help them snatch a point from Mumbai. The result helped both side remain unbeaten after three matches but ATK having played two draw could only mourn with the result.

Mumbai and ATK both had early chances but they couldn’t capitalize until Mumbai’s defederico came into action in the 27th minute. The Argentine playmaker controlled a long ball with his first touch and ran at ATK’s centre-backs, and unleashed a thunderous shot from the edge of the penalty box to beat Debjit Majumder to give the hosts lead.

Belencoso seems threatening from Lara free-kick but put it marginally wide three minutes before half-time to end first half in Mumbai’s favour. The second half began with Mumbai looking to defend their lead and Kolkata started to capitalize more with their ball possession, and that’s where Lara and Duttie started creating problems for Mumbai.

In the 64th minute ATK’s skipper Borja Fernandez capitalize on Mumbai sloppy clearance inside the box before rifling it across the face of goal. Doutie got beyond his marker at the near post but failed to direct his shot on target, which could have been an equalizer for the visitors.

But, the visitors had the last luck playing with a man advantage in the last quarter of the second-half. Mumbai’s defender Halder picked up a second yellow card for a rash tackle on Borja, and he got send off. Kolkata scored their equalizer in 82nd minute with Lara cut in from the left flank and fired in a powerful shot from outside the box that took a heavy deflection of Jackichand Singh before looping into the back of the net to make it 1-1.

Atlético de Kolkata looked to collect all three points from a Lara corner in last gasping minutes, which Tiri headed at goal. Volpato pushed the Spanish centre-back’s header straight at Stephen Pearson, who was closed down by Mumbai’s defence before he managed to get his shot away as Mumbai dropped their first points of the season.

Both sides failed to pull a trigger which could have win the game and end up earning points in a stalwart draw. Mumbai City FC goes on top with their seven points, whereas Atlético dropped to third with their two back to back draws.
