Aizawl FC is on verge of creating history and they are only a match away from lifting their maiden Hero I-League trophy. Khalid Zamil’s side snatched a late 1-0 victory against the visitor Mohun Bagan, who almost gave up their title challenge. Zohmingliana Ralte scored the winning goal in 83rd minute of the game, which was played under difficult conditions due to heavy downpour.
Northeastern side doesn’t only beat the heavyweight Bagan, but also knock them out from title challenge. Aizawl needs only a point to win their maiden Hero I-League trophy from their last fixture, and that will take care of other mathematical situations. Fifth placed Shillong Lajong FC will be their last opponent next week, and they’ll need only a point from that match.

It will also depend on the Mohun Bagan reaction to their defeat on the final day. Indian club football veteran will have to secure a victory against their rival Chennai City FC. But, it won’t help them much, until & unless Aizawl loses heavily against Lazong.
Mohun Bagan have had their chances to secure a victory against Aizawl, but they didn’t make the most of their opportunities. Jeje had the opportunity from a free-kick in 11th minute of the game, but Indian international failed to connect.
Mariners’ coach Sujoy Sen was quick to realize the achievement of Aizawl as he said,”First of all congratulations to Aizawl FC. We tried our level best but luck was not with us. The ambience and support was outstanding. Obviously they wanted their home side to win but they were very sporting,”
He also congratulated fellow manager Khalid Zamil for his efforts to make a team. “It’s a great achievement for Khalid because this is the first time he is out from Mumbai so it is nice that an Indian coach has gone so far. It is actually a proud moment for all Indian coaches and great for Indian football.”
There is not much possibility left for Bagan to lift the trophy, but Sujoy is optimistic. “If we can win the last match, there is an outside chance to win the I-League. I will never pray that any team will lose but in football anything can happen so we are keeping an open mind and we will strive to win our last match,” as reported by goal.com.
