Real Madrid 16 game winning run ends against Villarreal, Barcelona record still stand
Real Madrid were eyeing for a consecutive 17th win to set a new record of consecutive wins, but Los Blancos dream ends with playing a 1-1 draw against Villarreal at home, Santiago Bernabeu. Now, record of consecutive wins will be shared by both of the Spanish giants as they both have recored 16 consecutive wins. Real have achieved the feat including two seasons of 2015/16 and 2016/17, whereas Barcelona achieved this feat under Pep Guardiola helm in 2011. Real dream got shattered when Yellow Submarine took the lead from Bruno’s first-half penalty.
Both team goes into break with Villarreal having 1-0 lead, which is quite rare at Bernabeu, but this has happened 2nd time in a row at Bernabeu this season. In last match played at Real home stadium it was Sporting Lisbon who took the lead and Real somehow manage to pull the trigger in last gasping minute and found two quick goals to win the fixture. But, Submarine were in a different mood and specially hats off to their goal-keeper Sergio Asenjo who made a series of saves to halt Los Blancos at 1-1.
Although, Sergio Ramos mistake earned the penalty for the visitors and Bruno calmly converted it, but it was Ramos himself who also cut the Villarreal lead scoring from his header in second-half. It has become Real trademark goal, whenever they finds themselves in a rescue situation Ramos heads home.
Real were playing with their best starting eleven, except Luka Modric and Pepe who were missing from the line-up. It was Los Blancos star studded side, as Ronaldo, Bale and Benzema were together on the pitch, James Rodriguez and Mateo Kovacic finds ther place in midfield alongside Toni kross, Varane and Ramos took care of central defence. Danilo also finds his place ahead of Dani Carvajal at right-back.
It was a disastrous night for Cristiano Ronaldo, he was poor on the night, gave away ball cheaply as he looses possession and fired some shots from distance over the bar. Real started well keeping Yellow Submarine busy in their own half as passes, shots and crosses flooder in their own penalty-box, but Los Blancos failed to capitalise on their chances.
Villarreal used the same formation as Sporting Lisbon as four defenders guarding at back and five midfielders out bundled the opponents open play. But, Real as a top team finds their way and Bale and Benzema came near to score from their headers in first half itself. Villarreal then shows their class as former Real youth player Denis Cheryshev tried his luck from distance and Kiko Casilla fingertips denied the danger.
Second-half was all about Real chances but except Ramos paying back goal, nothing came handy. Zidane brought his bench strength Morata and Vazcuez on pitch, but it didn’t result in same magic as it happened against Sporting Lisbon. Morata came close to head home once again but Asenzo fingertips denied him to snatch the winner and achieve a great feat for the club winning 17th consecutive match. Ronaldo had the chance once again from his free-kick, but he shots right in the hand of Asenjo. Villarreal got the hard earned point at Santiago Bernabeu and sits on fifth at points table with 9 points, whereas Real will still sit at top with their 13 points.
Real Madrid will play next on Saturday against the surprise package Las Palmas who currently sits at fourth on La Liga table.
