Radja Nainggolan – Roberto Martinez tactical excuse to not pick me up for Belgium is a joke
Radja Nainggolan is clearly not happy after his omission from Belgium national team. He is furious about Roberto Martinez’s “tactical excuse” explanation to exclude him from FIFA World Cup Russia 2018.
Belgium head coach Roberto Martinez didn’t pick AS Roma midfielder in his final 23-man squad for the World Cup despite being his star status back in Rome. AS Roma attacking midfielder helped his side to reach to the semifinal of UEFA Champions League and yet he couldn’t find a place in his national side.
Nainggolan told HLN as Football Italia reports, “When Martinez came to see me in Rome I felt he was looking for a reason to not select me. He said I’m a fantastic player, but he couldn’t give me the same role for Belgium as I have with Roma.”
🗣 R. Martinez : “I understand the debate about Radja Nainggolan. It was difficult for myself and the staff. I’m not here to make popular decisions, but the right decisions. Belgian Football has a lot of good players.” #REDTOGETHER 🇧🇪 #WorldCup 🏆

“According to him nothing was decided at that point, but for me it was all clear. He said I’m not there for tactical reasons, but I’ve played in Italy for years and it’s the most tactical league.”
Roma midfielder adds that it wasn’t about tactics, it’s about discipline.
He said, “I did well for the Diables Rouges at the European championships, but suddenly after the Spain game I was out. It’s true that I arrived late but I’m not the only one who did that with Belgium.”
“I understand that I’m also supposed to be an example for young people. If that were the case I’d have been a teacher. I think we should talk about performances on the pitch, not what happens off it. I will not go back to Belgium, it’s over for me, my decision was correct.”
