Luka Modric thanked Zinedine Zidane for giving him confidence to win Ballon d’Or
We don’t know Barcelona or Real Madrid duopoly in La Liga will end this season or not, but we do know that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s duopoly of winning all the individual awards has ended. Luka Modric ends Messi and Ronaldo’s duopoly at top which ruled for a decade by winning this year all individual awards.
Mordic celebrated this year on high winning World Cup Golden Ball, UEFA Men’s Player of the season, FIFA Men’s Player of the year, and finally Ballon d’Or 2018. The Croatian star was as humble as he has always been after receiving the Ballon d’Or.
While speaking to BBC Sport, he dedicated the award to all of the other players who have missed out in 10 years dominated by Messi and Ronaldo. He said, “Maybe in the past there are some players who could have won the Ballon d’Or like Xavi, Andres Iniesta or [Wesley] Sneijder but people finally now are looking at someone else.”
Real Madrid midfielder also revealed to the world who first saw the spark in him to win the Ballon d’Or. Former Real Madrid player and manager Zinedine Zidane gave him the confidence to break the clutter.
Modric told France Football as Marca reports, “When Zidane become Real Madrid coach in January 2016, he called me to his office one day after training and told me how he saw me as a player and what he expected of me. He told me that I was an important player for him and, above all, that he saw me as as a player who could win the Ballon d’Or.”
He adds, “When someone like Zidane, with all of his personality and history, tells you that, it boosts your confidence. Even in spite of his words, I didn’t begin to believe it. When I recounted all the individual trophies that I’ve won this year and when I saw that I was among the 30 finalists, I began to believe it.”
Croatian is very grateful to Zidane to give him in the confidence and make him feel that he’s a special player. There wasn’t a specific moment where he told him that you can win it, but he knew where it was leading. Today, Modric has owned his dream and he’s the best player in the world.
Besides Modric, Lyon’s women team player Ada Hegerberg won first Women’s Ballon d’Or award and Kylian Mbappe was awarded the Best Young Player under-21.
