Jurgen Klopp’s defensive woes to cost Liverpool again

Jurgen Klopp,Liverpool,Premier League

Liverpool haven’t won the league in last 28 years, and still they are England’s second most successful team with 18 titles. It’s shame they haven’t win the league in Premier League age, but they have come close to winning it few times.

Reds have the most energetic fans to back them and watching a football match at Anfield is a treat. They believe in their team and every season they back their team to win the Premier League, but seasons keep extending and trophy didn’t come home.

Jurgen Klopp – former Borussia Dortmund coach who won back to back Bundesliga title in Germany came to Anfield with much limelight and brought hope in fans. He came in midway to 2015/16 season and Liverpool manages to finish at 8th place.

Klopp to focus on Liverpool’s defensive woes

He had a full season in throttle in 2016/17, and he delivered as expected in initial months. Reds were table topper after eleven match day and looked like a team to seal the championship. Everything changes with Philippe Coutinho injury sidelining him for two months and newly hired Senegal forward Sadio Mane inclusion in Africa Cup of Nations 2017.

Injuries, player departure to national duty and defensive woes combined cost Liverpool title. At the end of twenty-six play day Liverpool were at fifth place and they had 13 points gap to leader Chelsea. At the end of eleventh match day they have 8 victories, 2 draws and 1 defeat, but at the end of 26th match day, they had only 14 victories, 7 draws and 5 losses. Thanks to their late insurgence they finished the table at fourth place with 22 victories, 10 draws and six losses.

A team which looks like winning the title finished at fourth. The real reason is still haunting them coming into the fresh new season. They conceded 42 goals last season, more than a goal per match. Things haven’t improved this season as well, they have already conceded 12 goals in 7 matches. The central defensive duo – Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren haven’t clicked together in defensive duty and left back and right back pushing forward together in attack are not doing justice to their defensive duties.

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard loves watching Liverpool attacking formation, but he worries about exposed defense. He told BT Sport as reported in The Sport Review, “I love watching Liverpool. [But] my fear is they open up. You see Moreno playing so advanced. Both full-backs push so high. It’s brilliant to watch.”

Definitely, it’s a treat to watch Liverpool playing when they are on song. Coutinho’s magic is still weaving around; Mohammed Salah came as a great inclusion, Sadio Mane pace is still there and Firmino ready to put every ball in net played in penalty area. But, they need to take care of their defensive woes and concentrate on other half of the pitch as well.

They have conceded the goals which could have been avoided; they have played the draws which could have won. This season Liverpool have lost only once which came against Manchester City playing with a man down, but the 12 goals conceded in 7 match day is a big concern and Klopp needs to find the solution.

Anfield giants can’t afford to ask their fans to wait for one more season. Patience will dry up, fans will lose confidence in Klopp’s smiling face and they’ll ask for the answers in coming months. It’s right time to care of the defensive woes and sharpen the lost aggression in front as well. Goals have dried up as well and it looks like Coutinho is the only one trying to prove his mettle.
