Jorge Sampaoli finally departs from Seleccion Argentina’s helm
Jorge Sampaoli finally departs from Seleccion Argentina’s helm. Seleccion Argentina made it official that Argentina’s head coach Jorge Sampaoli has been relieved from his duty on a mutual agreement.
We don’t know if AFA would have taken the decision 15 days ago, it would have changed the Argentina’s future at World Cup or not, but at least we’d not have been saying that Sampaoli ruined Argentina’s 2018 World Cup.

There was complete mess after defeat against Croatia at group stage. Players were blaming each-other, they were in arguments and fight as well, blaming the coach, but none resulted in Argentine manager’s sacking. After watching Argentina game against Nigeria, everyone could have told that he’s not the boss. His body language was telling all that, and Javier Mascherano and Lionel Messi’s domination in locker room was the another picture to confirm it.
It was only AFA’s inability to pay his contract clause of €20 million, if he is sacked before Copa America 2019 allowed him to continue at Argentina’s helm. His departure was evident and on Sunday when France lifted World Cup, Argentina has their own breaking news – Seleccion Argetina has sacked Jorge Sampaoli as head coach.
AFA releases their official statement, “On the day of the date, Argentina Football Association and Jorge Sampaoli reached a mutual agreement to finish their cycle at the helm of the Argentine national team.”
“Today, the Argentine football Association and the former national team coach, Jorge Sampaoli, have mutually agreed to the termination of their contract. Likewise, the physical trainer Jorge Desio and the video analyst Matias Manna also disassociated themselves. This association thanks the professions for their activity developed within the seleccion during its cycle.”
Sport adds that Sampaoli will be paid €1.6 million in compensation. It’s a win-win situation for AFA because they were obliged to pay him €20 million. Thankfully, Sampaoli agreed to do it mutually for the sake of Argentina who don’t have the required amount of money to pay him as per agreement clause.
Sampaoli’s helm at La Albiceleste lasted only 13 months being in charge of 15 games. he took charge on June 1, 2017 with four CONMEBOL qualifiers left to play. Former Sevilla man failed to impress as he has done previously with Chile winning Copa America in 2015, and it was pure luck and Messi’s prowess that Argentina qualified for FIFA World Cup Russia 2018.
Ultimately mighty fall arrived at FIFA World Cup Russia 2018, when France defeated them 4-3 in round of 16. Sampaoli must have senses his doomsday coming in 6-1 friendly loss against Spain, but he continued with his experiment with the team.
He must have learnt something from Croatia’s Zlatko Dalic who is only nine months into charge of Croatia national team and his team played final of Russia 2018 World Cup.
Dalic didn’t experiment with his team. He played his best playing XI and brought positive energy into the squad, which helped Croatia reach World Cup final.
If Sampaoli would have been stick with the same principle, Argentina must have enjoyed the very same success as Croatia or they might have done better with Messi’s presence, but he took it all away from the Blue & White. He neither took Argentina’s best squad to the World Cup, nor played their best playing XI.
A coach uses his best of ability when he finds a structure to play his best players in playing XI. He was always in discontent with playing Messi and Paulo Dybala together, and latter spent whole of his World Cup campaign on the bench. He also sit out Argentina’s all no.9 against France, and it cost them dearly.
We have Seleccion Argentina have a good future ahead with a new man at their helm. Sampaoli must not be happy with his stint for Argentina national side, but sometimes you’re simply not the right man for the job. All the best coach for your future endeavor.
