It’s a week of derbies in world football. You may never have witnessed that many of scintillating derbies in the same week which you’ll witness this weekend. Derby della Madonnina (Inter Milan vs AC Milan) has already opened the week with their 0-0 midweek stalwart. However, Champions League football in midweek took the limelight away from the Milan rivals. But it won’t happen with the other derbies of the week because they’ll take place on the weekend when everyone will be eagerly waiting for domestic rivalry in the top division. There are Manchester derby, Madrid derby, Merseyside derby, and London derby to look forward to the weekend football.
Merseyside Derby (Everton vs Liverpool)
The week has already started with derby della Madonnina in midweek, but from the weekend perspective, Merseyside derby will entertain us. Premier League game rated only second best to Manchester United vs Liverpool game will heat up the atmosphere first in afternoon game on Saturday. Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will surely be missed in the derby as a local boy but the heat of the derby will continue with Jurgen Klopp’s at Liverpool helm. The most number of card produced game is surely not on the misses list for football fans on the weekend.
Manchester Derby (Manchester City vs Manchester United)
Manchester derby can’t be missed simply because it has come with a twist. If Manchester City registers a win against the United, they’ll be handed Premier League 2017/18 trophy with five matchdays left to play. United’s boss Jose Mourinho has a tough job to stop Guardiola’s men at their home turf to delay their title celebration but Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool has already made life easier for him. City suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat in midweek at the hands of Anfield giants in Uefa Champions League quarterfinal tie, and it won’t be a good time for the Citizens to go into a derby match.
Madrid derby (Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid)
Madrid derby will entertain us on Sunday with both teams looking to finish second on the La Liga points table. Barcelona at La Liga summit is already uncatchable for them and second finish on the table will be their real target. Madrid giants had already played a 0-0 stalwart at Wanda Metropolitano this season which produces eight yellow cards. The Sunday fixture is expected to produce another stalemate. In recent seasons Madrid derby has overshadowed El Clasico (Barcelona vs Real Madrid) because of their meetings in later stages of Uefa Champions League.
London derby (Chelsea vs West Ham United)
It’s one of the London derbies which have lost its relevance in recent times. North London derbies (Arsenal vs Spurs), Chelsea vs Arsenal and Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur matches have taken the center stage in London derbies, but it’s Chelsea vs West Ham is traditional London derby. Chelsea needs to make their records straight this season as they have already lost three of London derbies. If they have any hope of qualifying for the Champions League place, they need to win their all remaining seven matches.
Derby della Lanterna (Sampdoria vs Genoa)
Italy’s biggest derby “derby della Madonnina” have already taken place in midweek. Now, it’s time to enjoy the derby of the Lighthouse played between Sampdoria and Genoa. The city rivals see this derby as Italy’s oldest derby. There is not much to fight for but yes the result can play a big role in their goal to play in Europe next season. The berth for Europa League places is still open on Serie A table and 10th place could take a major leap forward.
