Latest FIFA rankings honoured Brazil with top spot as they eclipsed their South American rival Argentina, but it’s Indian National Football team who have a proud moment to cheer. India upsurges ahead at 101 with 31 spot improvement from last month. It’s India’s highest ever ranking in last 21 years.

India’s best ever ranking is 94, which Blue Tigers achieved in Feb 1996. India’s recent performances in international friendly matches helped them to secure their best ever in 21 years, but Blues Captain Sunil Chhetri believes that real test for India begins now.

“On a personal note, the joy is a little more given this is the highest ranking we’ve achieved during my time playing for the nation. But while we should celebrate every success, big or small, we also need to realize that the real test begins now,” Sunil Chhetri told Hindustan Times.

Indian captain also added, “In my opinion, rankings are a very fickle measurement of one’s success and it is best not to carried away by it. You lose one game, you slide down 40 places, you win one, and you climb up 50.”

“The real achievement will be when we cling on to this position or better it over the next three to four years. We’ll need to play more games with better opponents and keep performing well consistently at home and more importantly away.”

Brazil becomes the first team to qualify for 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia after their consecutive eight victories in CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers, and it also earns them the top spot in FIFA rankings. La Albiceleste drops to second with 41 points deduction, whereas Germany(3rd), Chile(4th), France(6th), Portugal(8th) and Spain(10th) maintained their position as it is. Colombia made a leap of two spot finding themselves at fifth exchanging the place with Belgium. Switzerland also makes room for themselves in top 10 rankings. Uruguay has the greatest disappointment as they dropped out of top 10, with six spot adrift at 15th.

Macedonia were the biggest movers of the month as they moved 33 spot ahead and sits at 133th position in FIFA rankings. Netherlands drop 11 spot further now sits at 32, whereas Sweden gaining the same no. of spots finds their place at 34. Bolivia with their victory over world no.1 Argentina moved 23 points ahead at 74th spot.

But, we should rejoice India lost glory. We have jumped 31 places to get our best ever rankings in 21 years. We won’t be playing in 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, but we can fight for 2022 FIFA World Cup for Russia. We need to keep improving, we have notched 11 places in Asia as well.
