Cristiano Ronaldo salary could be worrisome for other Serie A stars

In Serie A, it’s a significant gap. Other stars can respect what CR7 has achieved in his career, but they can’t compromise on their wage bill. They can’t watch a player getting paid 10 times their salary for the same amount of work they put in as well.

La Gazzetta dello Sport releases their annual data for Serie A players wage bills. It includes each clubs total wage bills and how much individually each star is getting paid at their club. It was found that Juventus new man and former Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo is taking home €31 million net per season. It’s triple the amount to second highest earner in Serie A.

Juventus loaned AC Milan forward Gonzalo Higuain’s earns only €9.5 million per season as second highest earner on wage bill. Serie A third most expensive man on wage bill, Paulo Dybala earns only €7m per season. it’s less than one-fourth what his teammate is taking home.

Serie A ready to exploit the hype created by Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo salary could be worrisome for other Serie A stars. However, we all know the star status of Cristiano Ronaldo and how he could influence a club business on and off the pitch. Juventus have already witnessed rise in their shirt sales and sponsorship deals are also increasing. Bianconeri can prove it that they are earning more than what they’re paying Ronaldo as annual wage.

Even KPMG has reported through its Football Benchmark report that Juventus will gain on and off field brand enhancement with Ronaldo. KPMG’s global head of sports, Andrea Sartori says as CNN reports, “Besides having acquired the potential of his on-field performance, the signing of such an iconic player can provide the ‘Old Lady’ with the unique opportunity of leveraging on Ronaldo’s massive fan base, both from a communication and commercial perspective.”

Serie A ready with global appeal & competitiveness

“However, we also do believe that Juventus FC’s shareholders will be able to fully capitalize on this investment if their business strategy will be adapted in order to better monetize their social media audience, which is expected to grow significantly in the months to come.”

KPMG report says, “Within three football seasons, we do believe it is realistic for Juventus FC to add an additional €75m to €100m complementing the €120m reported in their latest accounts as on 30 June 2017. There is no doubt that the signing of CR7 provides the club with a new, greater bargaining position with their main sponsors.

In addition to that, the global appetite for Ronaldo provides the Bianconeri with the opportunity to sign new lucrative licensing agreements, combined with the identification of new global sponsors.”

You must have understood Ronaldo’s influence on the game and how overall he is going to make Serie A richer, but it doesn’t mean it hasn’t hurt other players’ ego. Ronaldo has yet to open his account for Juventus after playing three games, whereas others around him at Juventus have proved that they’re match winners earning a lot lesser than him.

It’s always a conflict situation. The other Serie A stars who are playing for Napoli, AS Roma, Inter Milan, and AC Milan would also seek a similar wage payment in coming days. They have no obligation to what CR7 brings with his off-field presence, on-field they’re on same page.

It was never a problem when Cristiano Ronaldo was playing in La Liga at Real Madrid. There were so many big stars like Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, Luka MOdric, Toni Kroos, Marcelo and Sergio Ramos were playing in the same team. They definitely were not paid the same amount but they weren’t the ignorant one. Their wage bill was also significant.

Then, he had a competitor in Lionel Messi who is world’s highest paid footballer. Antoine Griezmann is also not very far behind at Atletico Madrid. It was a level field.

In Serie A, it’s a significant gap. Other stars can respect what CR7 has achieved in his career, but they can’t compromise on their wage bill. They can’t watch a player getting paid 10 times their salary for the same amount of work they put in as well.

It’s definitely a worrisome for other Serie A stars. If Serie A is going to be more profitable after Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival, they’ll have to pass on the bucks on other players’ wage bill. Otherwise, it will be a complete mutiny.
