Cristiano Ronaldo won his fifth Ballon d’or award on Thursday in Paris organized by France Football magazine. The Portuguese star finally ends the debate of the best player equaling the record set by Lionel Messi. Real Madrid forward is now on level with Barcelona star player in terms of winning Ballon d’or.

Ronaldo and Messi, both have won the prestigious trophy five times. It makes an even figure between them in a debate of the world’s best player. Now, it’s difficult to judge between them to call one world’s best because both shares the same number of individual awards.

Messi’s fans will still go for their star man, but Ronaldo doesn’t need anyone’s approval to call himself the world’s best. In an interview with David Ginola after receiving his fifth Ballon d’or, Ronaldo told France Football as reported by Sport, “I’m the best player in the history of football. I don’t see anyone who is better than me, no player has achieved the things that I have not done myself and I have done many things that others can’t do.”

He adds, “There is not a more complete player than me and I believe I’m the best player in the history of football, in the good and the bad moments.”

Messi finishes second and former Barcelona man Neymar finished third. Once again, Ronaldo won the individual battle winning Uefa Champions League. Messi and Ronaldo have shared the prestigious Ballon d’or award in last decade winning it on equal time.

Ronaldo started the decade with his first award in 2008, and then Messi dominated for four years winning it four consecutive times (2009,2010,2011,2012). Then, Real Madrid star won the prestigious award in 2013 & 2014, and Messi intervene him winning it in 2015 again with his fourth Uefa Champions League medal. Ronaldo dominated again winning two consecutive Champions League and in result winning the Ballon d’or in 2016 & 2017.

Kaka was the last man who won the Ballon d’or award as a third individual in 2007. Since then, Ronaldo and Messi’s duopoly has ruled for a decade. We have to see how long it prevails or someone else will end this duopoly.
