FC Barcelona has gone unbeaten this season for 30 games in La Liga. If you include last season seven games, it stretches to 37 game unbeaten records. It’s a remarkable achievement but Real Sociedad have done better than them. Real Sociedad had gone unbeaten in 38 games stretching over two seasons in 1978/79 to 1979/80. Barcelona will look forward to equal Sociedad record when they’ll host Leaganes on matchday 31 at Camp Nou.
Real Sociedad holds the record of longest unbeaten run in La Liga. La Real also owns the record of longest unbeaten run during a La Liga season. Sociedad 38 games unbeaten run stretches to six games unbeaten run at the end of 1978/79 season and 32 games unbeaten run in 1979/80 seasons. However, it still didn’t guarantee La Real Spanish Primera Division (La Liga) trophy. They lose out against Sevilla, and at the end, Real Madrid clinched the title.

Thank god, Barcelona won’t have to face the similar situation. They haven’t drawn more matches than their rivals to cost them the title. They are ahead on the points table with enough margins. Barcelona sits at the top with 76 points from their 30 games, and their nearest rival Atletico Madrid sits at second with 67 points.
There is little concern for Barcelona to lose the title. Blaugrana only need to make sure that they do in style. Their goal must be to become invincible of Spain. Leganes will be first challenging in doing so. If they don’t lose against Leganes, they’ll have another record to their names. They’ll equal Real Sociedad’s 38 games unbeaten record.
And in next game, if they beat Valencia or draw, they’ll equal Real Sociedad’s 32 games unbeaten record in a single season. Barcelona will have many records in mind because they may not get another opportunity to book all these records to their name. it’s once in a lifetime opportunity to become invincible. They only need to push for eight more games to become La Liga’s invincible team.
The title “Invincible” belongs to Arsenal for their Premier League run-in 2003/04 season. They had gone unbeaten to clinch the Premier League title. If Barcelona does the same in La Liga, they’ll go down in history after becoming the second team to go unbeaten in a football season.
There will be all eyes on Leganes game. Barcelona is desperate to emulate Real Sociedad’s feat amid their injury worries. Lionel Messi is a concern, Sergio Busquets is not fit and Gerrard Pique wants rest as well.
These injuries may ruin Ernesto Valverde’s plan to go unbeaten in the league. He wants his best player to be fit and playing. He may risk Messi in starting XI in order to secure the victory as we all know what happened last week against Sevilla in absence of Messi.
Barcelona was losing 2-0 before Messi was introduced and they snatched a 2-2 draw at the end. It was Messi’s magic in closing minutes which earned Barcelona the draw. Valverde wouldn’t like to be in the same position and he may risk La Pulga to play the game.
Leganes can do little to stop Barcelona’s run on their home turf. Camp Nou atmosphere will make sure that the unbeaten run stretches to 38 games and they also become the invincible team of Spain.
