Ballon d’or not only returned to France, it also lost its footprint on the world

Cristiano Ronaldo record margin vote made new Ballon d’or all European affair

FIFA and France Football failed relationship, after six long years of collaboration, tasted their first bitterness, as France Football with collaboration with L’Equipe presented their first golden ball on 12th Dec 2016, to Cristiano Ronaldo, and FIFA doesn’t even get concerned about tweeting to congratulate the Portuguese star. Well, it’s not only Fifa who failed to appreciate the effort of Real Madrid man after winning the Ballon d’or for fourth time in his career, France Football return to only journalists votes, and Cristiano Ronaldo record margin vote made new Ballon d’or all European affair as well. Ballon d’or not only returned to France, it also lost its footprint on the world.

Ronaldo received 745 points to top the 30 men chart, and won his 4th Golden Shoe, Ballon d’or 2016. Whereas his long time nemesis Lionel Messi, already a five-time winner of the prestigious award finishes at distant second with only 316 points. The margin between 1st and 2nd finisher, open era two most decorated players was more than double. Although, in voting around 200 journalists from all over the world participated, who belongs to a Fifa affiliated federations, but it clearly tells the dominance of the Europe in prestigious gala event.

Ronaldo do have a remarkable year, he won Uefa Champions League with Real Madrid, and won Euro 2016 as well in the summer with Portugal national team, and his on his way to win Club World Cup to end his year at high, but Lionel Messi stats were not that shocking. Messi also finishes the year with Laliga championship and Copa del Rey title, and not to forget Spanish Super Cup as well. If Ronaldo scores 51 goals in the calender year 2016, not including the goal scored in semi-final of Club World Cup in Japan, Messi scored 58 goals as well in the calender year, before the award got awarded. If we talk about assists, Messi has 32 to his name, whereas Portuguese star only manages 17 overhaul.

Well, there is no doubt Mr. CR7 was more deserving because he has two major European honour to his name this season, with Uefa Champions League and Euro 2016. He has every right to be handed over Ballon d’or 2016, considering Ballon d’or has returned to France, and European players will be more deserving than South Americans in this prestigious event gala from 2016 onwards. But, the journalists who voted to give Ronaldo(745) more than double points as compared to Messi(316), is a bit harsh on the Copa America finalist, and seasons best player on performance radar.

Atletico Madrid’s French striker Antoine Griezmann inclusion in the top three also gives the same story of home preference. French man did have a great year helping his club and national team to Uefa Champions League final & Euro 2016 final respectively. But, his goals doesn’t speak the volume of Barcelona another stalwart Luis Suarez.

FIFA didn’t came to support Ballon d’or winner Cristiano Ronaldo on his big day, as they didn’t take any initiative to honour him for the award received, before he kicked-off his next game in Japan after receiving the award. Now, it’s all on France Football, how they will react when FIFA chooses their “THE BEST Man Player of The Year”, which may also go in Cristiano favour.

The absences of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo from the gala event, also makes this gala event a formality as both stars skipped the event. Although, Ronaldo has his priority to play in Club World Cup in Japan, Messi misses the award ceremony to be in Qatar to play a friendly against Al-Ahli Saudi FC. Messi was knowing he is not going to be honoured in France, so he prefers to delight a young Afgani fan named Murtaza Ahmadi. The six-year-old made headlines earlier in the year when a photo of him wearing an improvised Messi shirt using a plastic bag went viral. News of the endearing image reached the Barca No. 10 who promptly sent his young fan a proper replica kit, and now kid dreams come true when he joined Messi in emerging from the tunnel in a pre-match ritual.
