Zlatan Ibrahimovic had already sealed the deal with his hat-trick in first leg at Old Trafford, but Manchester United still needed to play St. Etienne in second leg to progress into last 16. Hosts needed four goal to progress into last 16, and United defense were not that sloppy today to allow them to score those goals. Red devils took the lead in away game as well with the help of Henrikh Mkhitaryan flick from Juan Mata cross, and leap forward in the tournament with 4-0 on aggregate.

The only problem for United came in as a hamstring injury to Mkhitaryan, the goal scorer. Mkhitaryan departed early from the pitch after scoring the winning goal, and it left Mourinho to do a little rethinking for his team selection for the EFL Cup final against Southampton, on Sunday.

There was noisy home support for the St. Etienne, at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, often called “The Cauldron.” Manchester United may have struggled if they didn’t have 3-0 advantage from the first leg. United played around half an hour of game with 10 men, due to Eric Bailly sent off in 63rd minute of the game, but Etienne forward hardly looks to trouble United defense.

Jose Mourinho was left impressed with his team performance, and he is happy his team is alive in three competitions. They have an EFL Cup final on Sunday against Southampton, which will earn them their first silverware of the season if they win. They are also alive in FA Cup, they are tied up against Chelsea for the sixth round, and today they reached last 16 of Europa League as well.

Manchester United has suffered only one defeat in last 25 games, and that run may earn them a Champions league place as well, if they continue in the same fashion. Zlatan is leading from the front, and Pogba has finally started to raise his game. It was a bad day of Eric Bailly, but overall all of Mourinho’s new signings have started to help the team with their performance, and it’s good news for the Portuguese.
