Euro 2016 :Iceland shows England the Brexit door

Iceland shows England the Brexit door in Euro 2016 knockouts.  For the second time in a week, England suffer an ignominious exit from Europe. First was their choice to exit Europe through Brexit polls and now England are out of Uefa European championship 2016 by a defeat from minnow Iceland. Iceland registered their victory over England by 2-1.

Iceland a country with only a population of 330,000 humiliated England who may have last shot in European championship. They have established themselves as the greatest story of Euro 2016 and it feels almost like a trick of the imagination that it is only four years since they were ranked 133rd in the world and now they have defeated England.

England, the country which invented the sport couldn’t play it well against the unknowns. Icelanders played with determination, courage, skill and togetherness. England defeat against Iceland is compared with their historic defeat against USA in 1950 world cup, when great English side humiliated by newly arrived US.

Wayne Rooney put England into the match with his penalty in 4th minute, but Iceland didn’t sit back. They threw their man forward and scored two goals in quick succession which made the difference between the two teams. Ragnar Sigurdsson and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson scored for Iceland respectively in 6′ and 18′ minute.

Iceland first came within two minutes of England goal. Ragnar Sigurdsson started the scoring in 6th minute with his run in England’s six yard box. Iceland’s second goal followed in the 18th minute and, in fairness to Hart, he was not the only one to blame. Gary Cahill and Chris Smalling both stood off as Gylfi Sigurdsson, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Sigthorsson exchanged passes in the front of the area. Sigthorsson moved in between them both, took aim with his right foot and watched the ball sneak into the bottom corner.

England humiliation in major competition continues, and Roy Hodgson coaching prowess will end for England. Iceland will face next France in quarterfinals. Earlier in the first match of the day Italy stunned Spain to sent home as well. Iceland shows England the Brexit door and it seems it will be last Euros for England as they decided to exit European Union.
