Third-ranked Colombia, which won its only Copa title at home in 2001, plays Wednesday in Chicago against the winner of Saturday night’s quarterfinal between Mexico and defending champion Chile.
Rodriguez, Juan Cuadrado and Dayro Moreno converted the first three penalty kicks for Colombia, beating goalkeeper Pedro Gallese. Raul Ruidiaz, Renato Tapia had made the first two for Peru. Peruvian Trauco denied by David Ospina, Perez pounds it home for Colombia to make it 4-0, and Christian Cueva simply couldn’t find the net for Peru to tip it off over the bar.
David Ospina dived to his left, and Peru’s Miguel Trauco sent his penalty kick down the middle, a yard above the ground. The 27-year-old Colombian goalkeeper kicked out his trailing right leg, and booted the ball away to give Colombia an advantage in the shootout. About two minutes later, Christian Cueva stood over the ball, looked skyward, exhaled deeply and skied La Blanquirroja’s final attempt over the crossbar. And Colombia wins the game 4-2 on penalties.
“We goalkeepers have the advantage that we can use any part of the body.What matters is to stop the ball —with the ears, the nose, whatever. We goalkeepers have many resources.” David Ospina, Colombian Goalkeeper said after the match.
Colombia has only won Copa America one time in 2001, and they last reached semis in 2004. This may be their time to lift another trophy with their star studded side which includes the Real Madrid star James Rodriguez, AC Milan’s men Cristian Zapata & Carlos Bacca, Juan Cuardado who plays for Juventus on loan from Chelsea, and David Ospina- the goalkeeper who was one of the star of the 2014 World Cup and here he stood again for Colombia to prevent Peru to convert their penalties.
Colombia will play next against the winner of Saturday night quarterfinal match between Mexico and Chile. Argentina will be playing their game as well today according to US time but in India Argentina vs Venezuela will be live at 4:30 Am on Sony Espn and Mexico vs Chile at 7:30.
Colombia win over penalties in quarterfinal will help them prepare for semi-final and may be for potential final if they reach. In knockout stages we see a lot of penalty shootout and it’s good they have started early. All eye will be on Chile vs Mexico and Argentina vs Venezuela, two of the finalists are competing once again for their place in semis and if they reach to semis, they may once again will be playing in final and Argentina would love to avenge their loss of Copa America 2015.
