Liverpool were poor on the occasion. They didn’t hit a single shot on target in the 90 minutes of the game. It’s very rare from Liverpool knowing their attacking style of football watching them ply every week. Even Jurgen Klopp admitted that his team was poor and they deserved to lose the game.
He said, “It’s a bad sign when your goalkeeper is your best player. Tonight we were not good enough. Normally if you are not good enough you lose football games. That was us tonight.”
It wasn’t typical Klopp. The charismatic manager lost his charisma today against veteran Carlo Ancelotti. Italian manager is very happy with the result. He told Sky Italia, “You prepare games in your head and then it’s all down to interpretation. We tested yesterday with a few problems, but we kept working at it and this victory keeps us running for this group.”
Ancelotti explained in detail his plans. He said, “We defended with 4-4-2, the same as many other times. What changed was the building from the back, I put in Maksimovic to avoid the strong pressure Liverpool forwards tends to put on us. Mario Rui with a more open and wide position caused them problems. Above all, it was to stop them stealing the ball off us at the start of the attacking move.”
“It’s the game I expected and always do. I see the quality this time has, but with a little tension we don’t express ourselves the way we should. I hope this victory can build confidence and make us play with more freedom.”
Now, Napoli top the groups C with four points, including their points from 0-0 draw against Red Star Belgrade. PSG and Liverpool sits at 2nd and 3rd place on goal difference with their three points. Liverpool won 3-2 against PSG in their last fixture, whereas PSG won 6-1 today against Red Star Belgrade.
It was expected to be a complicated group but PSG easy defeat against Liverpool at Anfield and all the buzz around Liverpool being superior in the group was making it difficult to digest. Now, the group is back to their strength as Napoli, PSG, and Liverpool – all three have shown their potential.
