Uefa Champions League updates: PSG, Bayern, Chelsea & Barcelona advances, Manchester United, Atletico and Juventus to wait

Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D’s matchday 5 fixtures takes place on Wednesday.  Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich from the group B were the only team qualified for knockout rounds before matchday five, and there was much to be decided on matchday five.

Group A

SL Benfica is the only team out of contention for knockout rounds with zero points on table. Manchester United lead the group with their 12 points, but their 1-0 loss against Basel with Michael Lang’s 88th minute decider left them in lurch. They must wait for matchday sixth and tries to prove their point against Russian team CSKA Moscow.

CSKA Moscow registered a 2-0 victory over Benfica to equal points with Swiss team Basel. Both shares the nine points on table and only one will occupy the knockouts berth alongside Manchester United.

Group B

This group was already decided with PSG and Bayern Munich advancing to the knockout stages as group winner and second finisher respectively. And the solidify their position with respective win over Celtic and Anderlecht. PSG registered 7-1 victory over Celtic to emulate Barcelona’s last season victory over Scottish rival, whereas Bayern registered 2-1 victory over Anderlecht.

Group C

Chelsea, AS Roma and Atletico Madrid continues to challenge from group C for knockout berths. Chelsea leads the group with 10 points, and sure of making into the knockouts. Atletico Madrid, on the other hand after being criticized for poor display and dismal start of the season is trying to prove their worth. They beat Roma 2-0 to keep themselves in contention and now it will all depend on group C matchday sixth result.

Chelsea will face Atletico at Stamford Bridge and a victory will do for Rojiblancos if Roma loses against Qarabag. Chelsea will advance even if they lose because Atletico couldn’t accumulate more than 9 points. It’s battle between Roma and Atletico and Atletico have the advantage with a game in hand against Qarabag.

Group D

Barcelona played a 0-0 draw with Juventus in Turin, but it was good enough for them to earn them group winner spot. Juventus will have to wait for their knockout berth till matchday sixth against Olympiacos and hope Blaugranas must defeat Sporting Lisbon if Turin giant themselves failed to grab all three points against the Greek club.
