Real Madrid made sure domestic problems don’t hamper their Champions League run
Real Madrid may be sitting at sixth place on La Liga table, but they made sure they lead UEFA Champions League group G table. After receiving a 3-0 defeat in domestic competition against Eibar, they bounced back with a 2-0 victory against AS Roma in Champions League. They made sure that their domestic problems don’t hamper their Champions League run.
It was a slow start at Stadio Olimpico and Roma were better team in the first-half. They missed plenty of opportunity to deny themselves sitting at top of group G and hand Real Madrid an edge at top.
Giallorossi must have missed their star striker Eden Dzeko as their players missed many chances to convert in the first-half. Real Madrid’s struggle in their defensive half was in display once again as they needed to scramble out couple of times. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and Dani Carvajal made back to back saves to deny AS Roma’s opportunity, and in rebound Aleksandar Kolarov misfired a bulled just outside.
Hosts were not in luck or simply not focused as Cenzig Under missed a golden opportunity from few yards out. Carvajal lost a ball deep in their own half and it was all there for Turkish forward to give lead to Roma, but he hammered his shot over the crossbar when he only needed to escape Courtois.
Real Madrid, then making the most of their luck bounced back in the game. In the second-half, Real Madrid banged on their goal opportunity as Federico Fazio tries to play a header back to goalkeeper and didn’t sensed the threat from onrushing Gareth Bale. Bale interrupted the pass and scored one of the easiest goal of his career to give Real Madrid lead.
Wales’ star could have another moments later, when Marcelo served him a long ball, but this time Bale wasted the opportunity with a weak shot. But, visitors didn’t sit back and got their second of the night through a brilliant build-up. Luka Modric slipped a pass to Gareth Bale, who curled in a cross For Benzema to head-back for Lucas Vazquez to latch onto and give Real Madrid 2-0 lead.
A lackluster first-half performance turned into a brilliant effort in second-half. Santiago Solari somehow overcome weekend humiliation with a convincing victory to go on top of group G table to finish as group winners. AS Roma also qualifies as runners-up from the group as Victoria Plzen and CSKA Moscow got eliminated. However, who will join Europa League will be decided after match day six, as both teams share the same points on table.
