Paris Saint-Germain’s Qatari owners have only one goal in mind to win Uefa Champions League. They are fighting for the Europe’s elite trophy every year but they have failed to reach the last four stage on each occasion. Oryx Qatar Sports Investments acquired the club in 2011 and since then they have invested billions to reach the summit.
Finally 2017/18 season is showing some sign that PSG can become European powerhouse. Parisian club spent €222 million in summer to acquire Neymar and brought young promising kid Kylian Mbappe on loan from their direct rival AS Monaco. They have strengthened the team and PSG is on right track to create history.
It’s still an early stage to jump on any conclusions, but PSG have proved they are the best team in the world at the moment. They have scored 17 goals in Uefa Champions League 2017/18 season in four games and they still need to concede a goal.
They started with 5-0 hammering of Celtic FC in Glasgow, finishes of Bayern Munich 3-0 at Parc des Princes, hammered 4-0 Belgian champion Anderlecht on their home turf before routing them 5-0 back at home on Tuesday. Parisians are only four goal short of emulating the feat of Borussia Dortmund’s 21 group stage goals and they have two games left to break the record. And if they makes enough saves to not concede a single goal in remaining two matches, it will be another record to their name.
It’s not only the stars like Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani who have been instrumental in each of these victories. There are stars like Layvin Kurzawa (hat-trick hero in 5-0 victory against Anderlecht), Angel Di Maria, Dani Alves, Julian Draxler, Marquinhos, Kevin Trapp and Marco Verratti, who have contributed fairly to advance them to next stage.
PSG was team to reckon when they won 4-0 last season against Barcelona in first leg of quarterfinals at Parc des Princes, but it followed up with a 6-1 debacle at Camp Nou in second leg. All the dreams and euphoria lasted only for weeks and Naseer Al-Khelaifi takes its personal decision to lure the hero of the Barcelona’s second leg Neymar.
It has cost PSG €222 million to bring Neymar in Paris and there are some rift between the Brazilian and his teammates due to his royal treatment, but on the pitch they have shown cohesiveness. The results can’t lie and seventeen goals scored without conceding one proves they are on right track to achieve their objective.
They have passed the test against the Bavarians defeating them 3-0, and they’ll b eager to face teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid in further stages to prove their worth. This PSG team is definitely playing better football than the squad represented them in last five seasons.
There were Zlatan era, Cavani’s attacking prowess and Di Maria magical spell, but it’s Neymar & Co. dream XI who are bound to bring Uefa Champions League home and create history for the Parisians.
