Sergio Aguero becomes Manchester City all time leading scorer with his 178th City goal

No one considered Manchester City to be favourite in Naples after Napoli displayed their attacking prowess in Manchester Stadium two weeks ago. Although, Napoli loses 2-1 at Etihad in Manchester, they were the favourite to beat Pep Guardiola’s side in Naples.

It was going in the right direction when Lorenzo Insigne gave Napoli 1-0 lead, but it took a sharp turn when Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones (the defensive pairing) took the charge to lead City. Jorginho meanwhile leveled the score for Napoli from penalty spot, but there was a twist in the tail and Manchester City emerged victorious on Italian soil.

Pep Guardiola takes his time to build a team and it was a work in progress last season when he first took the helm at Manchester City. A season later, he has proved his team plays the best football in the world and Manchester City’s current form shows the title potential.

Standing five points clear at top in Premier League, City is already considered as Premier League favourite and after overcoming Napoli’s challenge home and away, there is no doubt they are Uefa Champions League favourite as well.

City sits at top of Group F with 12 points and conceded only three goals and each conceded against Napoli. They conceded one at Etihad against them and twice in Naples, but they managed to score six as well against Serie A table toppers. And their latest 4-2 victory over the Partenopei is enough to answers the doubters.

They are playing the best football at the moment and the whole squad has emerged to be contributing in the victories. There were four different players on the scoresheet once again. Nicolas Otamendi opened the scoring to level the terms in 34th minute, whereas John Stones gave the lead in 48th minute.

Replying to his critics Sergio Aguero scored his 178th goal in crucial time to break Eric Brook 78 years old City’s leading goal scorer record. Raheem Sterling scored his 10th goal of the season in all competition to make it 4-2 for the Citizens in added time.

Kevin De Bruyne continues to shine with his passing ability. Leroy Sane and Jesus are the added gems in the Guardiola side, and inclusion of Bernardo Silva added cherry on top. David Silva, all time veteran continues to rejoice the world with his attacking mindset and his current teammate De Bruyne seems to be his only successor to replace him as Premier League’s best midfielder.

Guardiola spent a season without trophy in England, which was quite unusual for him. Now, he is ready to answer his critics and everything seems to be patched up in City’s dressing room. Its good enough sign to go for the glory and Napoli was the initial hurdle to test them in European competition. The European giants must be ready to face improved Manchester City side or else there will be surprises for them in later stages.
