Lyon once again realized Pep Guardiola that Champions League is a different nut to crack
In match day 5, pre-match press conference Pep Guardiola has a different tone to what he has to offer on post-match. Olympique Lyonnais once again realized Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, Champions League is a different nut to crack. Lyon after earning 2-1 victory over Citizens at their home way back in September, pulled 2-2 draw at home in return fixture at Groupama Stadium, Lyon.
Manchester City fought back twice to earn a draw to sit back at top of the group F. Maxwel Cornet scored twice for Lyon in second-half, but goals from Aymeric Laporte and Sergio Aguero helped City to earn a draw a save themselves from another European humiliation. They comfortably sit at top of the group F, but they at least need a point against Hoffenheim on match day 6 to qualify as group winners, if Lyon pulled a victory against Shakhtar Donetsk in their last group match.
Pep Guardiola was boasting about his team needs to win Champions League to prove themselves great in the pre-match press conference, but in post-match he was forced to realize that his team is yet not ready for Europe.
He said as Sky Sports reports, “The Champions League showed me again it is a different competition, especially for one reason: the players are better. You have time in the Premier League, you can lose games in the Premier League and you still have 38 games to do. Here, there is huge quality. It is another completely different competition.”
Spaniard was quick to point out other Premier League teams chances in the competition. He added, “One of Inter or Tottenham will be in the Europa League! You can’t imagine how good they are. And one of Liverpool, PSG, Napoli will be in the Europa League! You can’t imagine how good they are.
“After losing our first game against Lyon, it is not a surprise we saw this again today. So with one game left, we’ll be there again in February again. When the draw was made, they said: ‘Ok, Manchester City, it will be easy, no problem at all!’ The people when say that never saw once in their life a game of Lyon, never saw one game of Hoffenheim, never saw one game of Shakhtar! From my experience, because I have more experience than some people, this competition is completely different.”
