Atletico Madrid started with victory having inspiration to play final at Wanda Metropolitano
UEFA Champions League 2018/19 final will be held at Atletico Madrid’s home stadium Wanda Metropolitano. Atletico boss Diego Simeone has already said that it will be great to lift Europe’s elite trophy at our home and they have started with victory having inspiration to play final at Wanda Metropolitano. Los Colchoneros defeated AS Monaco 1-2 coming from behind in their away fixture at Stade Louis II.
Samuel Grandsir opened the scoring for the home side poking a ball into the net capitalizing on Saul Niguez and Angel Correa’s mistake. It was a brilliant start for Monaco, but Atletico soon brought themselves back into the match thanks to Diego Costa’s strike.
Spanish forward combined very well with Antoine Griezmann, and French playmaker served him well to level the score for Atletico Madrid. And before the first-half ends, Jose Gimenez scored a brilliant header from Koke’s corner ball.
It wasn’t a very tasty performances from the Los Colchoneros but you can hardly complain as their boss Diego Simeone wasn’t on the touchline. He is still serving his four match ban which he suffered in sending off during last season Europa League semifinal.
It’s a good sign that at least they have an away victory. Last season, they were eliminated from group stage after failing to live up to the expectations. Chelsea and AS Roma made their way to the last 16 on the expense of their elimination.
This time they don’t want to make any mistake knowing UEFA Champions League final will be played at their home ground. They have started with an away victory and it’s healthy sign. It’s not an easy group this season as well. AS Monaco, Borussia Dortmund, and Club Brugge have the potential to be a threat and Atletico can only hope that their goals don’t dry up.
In other matches of the day, earlier Barcelona win 4-0 against PSV Eindhoven at Camp Nou in group B fixture. In the same group, Inter Milan registered a 2-1 victory against Tottenham Hotspur at San Siro.
Atletico Madrid’s group A opponent, Borussia Dortmund beat Club Brugge 1-0, thanks to the courtesy of late goal from 20-year-old American teenager Christian Pulisic. It was his birthday today as well. He gave a perfect gift to himself.
In group C fixture, Liverpool defeated PSG in a dramatic fashion. Firmino scored an injury-time goal to beat PSG 3-2. In the same group, Napoli drew 0-0 against Young Boys playing in Switzerland.
FC Porto and Schalke 04 played 1-1 draw in group D fixture. In the same group, Galatasaray beat Lokomotiv Moscow 3-0 to put their three points on the table.
