Group C leader AS Roma and second placed Chelsea most likely to qualify for knockout stages

It’s a disastrous season for Atletico Madrid. Los Colchoneros have failed to register a single victory in their four group games and sits at third on group C points table with 3 points. The two time finalist of last four seasons is on verge of elimination from the group stage in 2017/18 Uefa Champions League season.

Atletico have lost against Chelsea at home, and played their home and away game draws against the weakest group C opponent Qarabag FC. Group C leader Roma also managed to play a 0-0 draw at home against them. It’s now all dependent on Atletico’s attitude against Chelsea in away game and home game against Roma.

Roma sits at top of group C with 8 points after their convincing 3-0 victory over Chelsea. The Blues followed them with their 7 points after losing five points against Roma in encounters against them. Atletico finds itself in uncomfortable position sitting at third knowing its rival still have a game left against Qarabag, which will prove enough for them to open the door for knockout stages.

Los Rojiblancos couldn’t lose faith in themselves and have to fight for their respect in Europe. They are fifth ranked team in Europe according to Uefa co-efficient and they can’t lose battle against Chelsea and Roma in order to qualify for the knockout stages.

Their next opponent Chelsea looks vulnerable at times and Roma has proved Blues can be beaten at home. Roma secured a 3-3 draw at Stamford Bridge to grab an away point, and Chelsea were lucky to pull a draw after trailing 3-1 in first hour of the game. Atletico needs to lace up to fight for their respect in Europe and overcome a difficult visit to Stamford Bridge and hope Roma loses points against Qarabag.

The final group stage game will then prove to be crucial and there’ll be enough to fight for each of them. Atletico’s current form doesn’t guarantee a big victory but they’ll have to find a way to get back into scoring terms. Goals have dried up for them and Antoine Griezmann is not looking as lethal as he has been in past to earn himself a third placed finish in Ballon d’or race last season.

Los Colchoneros will have to get back their confidence soon and Diego Simeone needs to be resilient enough to overcome teams like AS Roma and Chelsea. He can’t simply put his weapon down against teams who are not regulars in Europe’s elite competition; otherwise Atletico run at top will last without a trophy in hand. They need to keep pushing hard, knockout looks at distant, but it’s not all gone.
