UEFA Best Player in Europe final three doesn’t consist Messi

Antoine Griezmann, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale are finalists for “Uefa Best Player in Europe Award”. Lionel Messi is missing from the final three which raises the question why he is missing from the final three? Well, it’s not the first time Messi hasn’t secured a place in final three, Messi also missed it in 2013-14, and he was at joint 5th with Philipp Lahm.

The UEFA Best Player in Europe Award is an association football award given to the footballer playing for a football club in Europe that is considered the best in the previous season. The award, created in 2011 by UEFA, is aimed at reviving the European Footballer of the Year Award (Ballon d’Or), which was merged with the FIFA World Player of the Year Award in 2010 to become the FIFA Ballon d’Or.It also replaced the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year award.

Since, it’s inception in 2011, Messi has won the prestigious award twice, but he has failed to make into the final third twice as well. The award has been won by Lionel Messi a record two times (2011, 2015), Andrés Iniesta (2012), Franck Ribéry (2013) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2014).

Last time Messi missed the final three list, Cristiano Ronaldo was in sole position to win it. And, he did win it, and this time it won’t be any different as well. Ronaldo name is written on the trophy. Griezmann and Bale are good competitor as well, but they are not the names who can beat Ronaldo stature.

Ronaldo had the best season ever, he wins Champions League for record 11th time for Real Madrid, and he won Uefa Euro 2016 for Portugal which was like a dream come true. He scored 51 goals in all competition excluding his success with Portugal. He scored 35 laliga goals, 16 champions league goals and three in Uefa Euro 2016. Only trophy he missed is domestic championship Laliga, out of three he participated.

While Ronaldo teammate Gareth Bale had a good domestic season too despite his injuries . He scored 19 goals for Real Madrid and he led Wales from front and helped them to reach semifinal with his three prolific goals. His success with his national team Wales, and two hat-ricks with Real Madrid deserves his name to be in the list. He has total of 22 goals and 14 assists this season.

Antoine Griezmann is not a surprise inclusion as well. He has indeed a very good season with the club & country as well. He has 22 Laliga goals, 7 champions league goals and 6 Euro 2016 goals to his name. He took home the adidas Golden Boot and was crowned player of the tournament at Euro 2016. He has total of 38 goals and 8 assists, but he is kind of short in winning trophies for his team.

In those three players Ronaldo will be favourite, and it is always a plus for him in any competition when Messi is missing from the competition. The Barcelona duo of Luis Suarez & Lionel Messi stands fourth and fifth on the list. It’s not that they haven’t had the best season, the only thing missing is trophies with their national team.

Luis Suarez had his best season, he scored 53 goals, assisted 21 goals in all competition for Barcelona, but he couldn’t make it to the final three. Because Uefa members gave more weight to recently concluded Euro 2016, and champions league, Suarez couldn’t make it to the final three. He scored 7 hat-ricks but he couldn’t make it to the final three of the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award.

Lionel Messi, on the other hand has more assists and goals than Griezmann & Bale combined, but his lack of trophy, Argentina final defeat in Copa America, retirement announcement, and tax charges, all combined has damaged his reputation.

Messi will be back next year, to make his hat-rick of UEFA Best Player in Europe Award. Till then cheer for Ronaldo, he deserves his share of glory as well, it doesn’t matter who he is competing with, he is still out there best.
