An even distribution between group winner and second finisher
This Uefa Champions League group results has witnessed a even distribution of group winners and second finisher. In the top 16 tie, neither the team finishing at top are in an advantageous position, nor the team finishing second will fear to go home after top 16 tie. As the group game witnessed some mesmerizing fixtures, top 16 will have some tough competitive matches. Top 16 tie will no longer be battle of best vs second tier team, when draw will reveal the possible opponent on Monday.
|Atletico Madrid||Bayern Munich|
|Borussia Dortmund||Real Madrid|
There is no disparity between the team finishing as group winner or runners-up. Group winners and runners-up both are mix of some good teams and some average team. If Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Leicester City, Monaco, and Napoli completes the group winner; PSG, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Sevilla, Porto, Bayer Leverkusen, and Benfica completes the runners-up teams.
After taking a look on to the top 16 qualified team, it’s not easy to tell the result of group 16 tie, until & unless draw takes place, and in some of the matches even we will have to wait for the both legs to be played to get result.
Permutation & Combination :
Despite winning group A, Arsenal can face Sevilla, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Porto, Bayer Leverkusen, or Benfica. Whereas PSG despite finishing second will avoid likes of Real Madrid & Bayern Munich, and they can face Napoli, Leicester City, Juventus, Dortmund, Manchester City or Barcelona. In real sense, they can only face Barcelona whom they would like to avoid so early in the competition.
Group B winner Napoli may face any of the seven runners-up; PSG, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Sevilla, Porto, or Bayer Leverkusen, except their own group member Benfica. Same holds true for runners-up Benfica who will do better facing winners list avoiding only Napoli. Leicester City, Juventus, Dortmund, Manchester City, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid or Barcelona, anyone can be their opponent in top 16 draw.
In group C, Barcelona is in most advantageous position, as they will be able to avoid three good teams from the runners-up teams. Manchester City, Real Madrid and Sevilla can’t be drawn against them, because two of them belongs to same country as winners and City were in same group as Barcelona. In this sense if Barcelona avoids Bayern Munich, they are pretty safe if they got tied up against PSG, Porto, Bayer Leverkusen, or Benfica. Whereas runners-up Manchester City can play Napoli, Atletico Madrid, Monaco, Borussia Dortmund or Juventus.
Group D winner Atletico Madrid is also in advantageous position as they will be able to avoid Real Madrid, Sevilla and Bayern Munich. Their possible opponent could be; PSG, Benfica, Manchester City, Bayer Leverkusen or Porto. Whereas runners-up Bayern Munich may face Arsenal, Napoli, Barcelona, Monaco, Leicester City or Juventus.
Group E winner Monaco may face Benfica, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Porto or Sevilla. Runners-up Bayer Leverkusen can face Arsenal, Napoli, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Leicester City or Juventus.
Group F winner Borussia Dortmund clearly avoids four big teams Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Their possible opponents left from the runners-up are PSG, Benfica, Manchester City, Porto or Sevilla. They will avoid runners up Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen belonging to the same association or country, and Real Madrid were in the same group.
Group G winner Leicester can only avoid Manchester City and FC Porto from the runners-up list. They will face tough opponents in their debut season as a group winner, as teams like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, PSG, Benfica, Bayer Leverkusen, or Sevilla are waiting to be drawn against the Foxes. Porto can face any of the seven from winners list, as they can face Arsenal, Napoli, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Monaco, Borussia Dortmund or Juventus.
Group H winner Juventus boosted their squad spending €90m on Gonzalo Higuain as they fancy their chances in Uefa Champions League. But, it will be a great set back for them, if they got tied up against Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Manchester City or PSG. The team they would prefer will be Benfica, Bayer Leverkusen, or Porto to keep their dream alive a little longer. Whereas runners-up Sevilla is well placed to avoid all big teams, and it seems three time defending Europa League winner can go a further this year in Uefa Champions League. They clearly avoided Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid, Spain’s top three, whereas also avoiding PSG, Bayern Munich and Manchester City because they also finished as runners-up. Their possible opponent will be Arsenal, Napoli, Monaco, Borussia Dortmund, or Leicester City.
