Besiktas earned a mammoth 3-3 draw against Benfica to remind 2005 Istanbul final

Benfica may have never thought about a draw, when they would have gone into the tunnel at the end of first-half. They were 3-0 up, at the end of first-half, but Besiktas put on a remarkable performance in 2nd half to earn a mammoth 3-3 draw at home, Vodafone Arena, Istanbul. Goals from Goancalo Guedes, Nelson Semedo, and Ljubomir Fejsa inside the first 31st minutes of first-half, had put visitors on driving seat, but second-half belonged to home side. Second-half goals from Cenk Tosun, Ricardo Quaresma and Vincent Aboubakar late equalizer in 89th minute, made the night memorable earning Besiktas a point to halt Benfica run in champions league, and creating a chance for themselves.

Guedes opened the deadlock for visitors in 10th minute, rounding off Besiktas goalkeeper Fabricio Ramirez from Eduardo Salvio assist. Semedo strikes in 25th minute with a stunning effort which hit the bar first, before going into the net. Six minute later woodwork hit again, not once or twice, but thrice before Fejsa finally put the ball in the net. Bizarrely, but Portuguese side were 3-0 up, playing away in Istanbul.

As bizarrely Benfica were 3-0 up, Besiktas fought back in style. Tosun starts Besiktas fight back in 58th minute with his acrobatic display from Andreas Beck’s cross. Victor Lindelof caught handling the ball in penalty-box for the visitors, and Quaresma did his job from the penalty spot to make it 3-2. But, it was Aboubakar, who breaks Benfica heart, and win his fans hearts snatching a draw in 89th minute from close range.

It may not have the similarity to the 2005 champions league final between AC Milan and Liverpool, because of that match stature, but the way game was played was similar to that result. In that match AC Milan was laeding 3-0 from the first-half, and Liverpool had come from behind to earn a 3-3 draw, and then ultimately goes on winning the game on penalties. Although, Besiktas didn’t have the penalty option to win the game, but certainly the comeback was remarkable.

Besiktas have 7 points from five games, and Benfica have 8 points. Napoli currently at third is playing their fixture against Dynamo Kyiv and a victory will ensure their position at top.
