Bayern Munich starts the new Bundesliga season giving Hoffenheim a lesson
TSG Hoffenheim finished third on Bundesliga table last season. They are back this season with delight of playing in UEFA Champions League, but Bayern Munich remind them on the opening day of new Bundesliga season that it was one-off success for them. Bayern Munich starts the new Bundesliga season with 3-1 victory giving Hoffenheim a lesson.
Bundesliga authority tried to build their TRP of a new season matching Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim on opening day. They thought it will be a great move, but Bayern made clear from the first day that they have got no competition domestically in Germany.
Bavarians send Hoffenheim home registering a 3-1 victory at their home stadium Allianz Arena. They were two disallowed goals as well; otherwise it would have been 5-1. VAR made their impact felt on the very first day of the Bundesliga season.

Bayern Munich started well thanks to Thomas Muller strike in the 23rd minute finding a fierce header from Joshua Kimmich’s corner. Kingsley Coman getting a nod ahead of Arjen Robben in this ageing Bayern squad came close to making it 2-0 before he was carried-off with an ankle injury due to one-on-one clash with Oliver Baumann.
Arjen Robben came close to scoring in opening minute of the second-half before Robert Lewandowski’s effort was ruled offside. With changes goes begging for Bayern, Hoffenheim find the rhythm with Adam Szalai’s leveler.
Hoffenheim were lucky with their captain Kevin Vogt’s departure due to an injury and it unsettled their defense. It brought momentum back to home side when substitute Havard Nordtveit awarded a penalty to Franck Ribery.
Lewandowski took the resultant penalty and Baumann made a brilliant save only for Robben to put it inside the goal post in rebound. But, veteran was penalized for encroachment and referee decided that penalty will be retaken. It only helped Lewandowski to start new Bundesliga campaign with a goal third season in a row.
Polish striker has already started his new campaign with a hat-trick against Eintracht Frankfurt in Super Cup and scoring a sole goal in close victory over Drochtersen in DFB-Pokal’s first round.
2-1 was good enough to earn all three points for the Bavarians, but they looked to go for more in the closing minutes of the game. Muller was denied his second of the day with another VAR intervention. He was caught handling the ball when it took a deflection into the post. But, Robben name was already written on the scoresheet as he scored his trademark goal in the 90th minute with the assist from debutant substitute Leon Goretzka.
Hoffenheim learnt a lesson that it’s not a good idea to start the campaign visiting Allianz Arena on the opening day.
