Hoeneß: Other clubs have to work better. Munich domination is a work of hard work. We have yes at Bayern, not a special patron who gives us money, or an heiress from America. We have worked this out in 40 years here.
Bundesliga officials are planning to reform the format of German championship with an inclusion of playoffs to decide the winner of the league. Bayern Munich’s increasing domination at the top has forced Bundesliga to find an alternative to make it more competitive at the end of the tournament. But, Bayern president Uli Hoeneß has condemned the play-offs introduction plans.
Hoeneß told Suddeutsche Zeitung as Sports Bild reports, “Just change the rules just because the others are not coming along so easily and they’re competitive again? It cannot be. That would be totally unfair. After all, FC Bayern did not unlawfully come to this success.”
Bayern Munich will win their 28th Bundesliga title this season. It will be their sixth consecutive title as well. It really shows the gap between quality of Bayern and other Bundesliga teams, but introducing play-offs is not a solution.
You have to raise your games. The teams need to be competitive with little more investment in their squad. They need to raise their bar to compete on level term with the Bavarians. Borussia Dortmund did five years ago. Schalke 04 dominated in 1940’s, Borussia Monchengladbach in 70’s. Last decade was more competitive as Wolfsburg (2008/09), Stuttgart (2006/07), Werder Bremen (2003/04) and Dortmund (2001/02) joins Bayern Munich in winning the title.
This decade started well as well when Dortmund clinch back to back titles before Bavarians started to dominate the game. It will be unfair to introduce play-offs to end someone’s domination. This is not a permanent solution.
Hoeneß questioned the play-offs model as he said, “Bayern is now in the semifinals of DFB Cup and possibly in the semifinal of Champions League. And at the same point, you have to start with the playoffs. Or let’s say we are coming to the Champions League final, and then we would have to play playoffs in between. How is that supposed to work?
Bayern president said, “I simply believe that the other clubs have to work better. Munich domination is a work of hard work. We have yes at Bayern, not a special patron who gives us money, or an heiress from America. We have worked this out in 40 years here.
The play-offs model itself has been in question. In India, Indian Super League is based on playoffs model. FC Bengaluru were 8 points clear at the top at the end of league matches this season but after playoffs, they lose against Chennaiyin FC in final. Bengaluru were not happy with the format of the tournament. They saw their hard work throughout the season to top the table goes wasted with playoffs introduction. The one-off match took the title away from them, which was deservedly theirs as per European League formats.
Play-offs introduction will only kill time and hamper the best teams’ performance in European games at final stages. Uli Hoeneß is telling from his experience. The other teams might have a good game in the playoffs and they will win the Bundesliga title, but what about the qualitative difference during league matches. It won’t increase your global audience. You need to make the league stronger with investment in your team, and that’s the only way a league can be won in the modern game.
